Privacy Policy — Kalamo

Last updated: 2026-09-25

Kalamo ("the app") is a language-learning app. This policy explains what the app does with your information. It is written to be short and true.

The short version

Kalamo has no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking. Everything you do stays on your phone, with three exceptions:

  1. Messages you write or say to the AI tutor are sent to an AI provider so it can reply.
  2. When you use the microphone, your phone's own speech service (Apple on iPhone, Google on Android, or your browser on the web) turns your voice into text. Kalamo never records or keeps the audio, and never sends it to us or to the AI provider.
  3. Kalamo Pro. A random installation number is sent to our server so it can tell whether Pro is active — during the free month, through a subscription, or through a code (see Kalamo Pro).

What stays on your device

The app saves the following only on your phone, using the device's own storage:

Apart from the installation number, which is sent as described below, this information is never uploaded, never shared, and never seen by us. Uninstalling the app removes all of it.

The AI tutor

When you send a message on the Tutor screen, the app sends it to our server, which passes it to our AI provider — DeepSeek, a company based in China — and returns the reply.

What is sent:

The installation number. The first time you open Kalamo, the app makes up a random string (something like k3f9a1c8b2d7e0f4). It is sent to our server for two reasons: so it can count tutor messages and stop at the daily limit (5 a day on the free plan, 50 with Pro), and so it can tell whether Kalamo Pro is active. It is not your name, not your email, not your phone's ID, and it is not connected to anything about you — the app never learns who you are. It is not used for advertising, analytics, or tracking you across apps or websites. Reinstalling the app replaces it with a new one.

What is not sent:

How it is handled — please read this part. We do not store your messages on our server; they are passed through and the reply is returned. But once a message reaches DeepSeek, DeepSeek's own rules apply, and they are not the same as ours:

DeepSeek's own documents: privacy policy and platform terms.

We chose this provider for an ordinary reason: it is the one we are able to pay for from where we are. We would rather say that plainly than imply a protection we cannot deliver.

What this means for you. If you are not comfortable with the above, do not use the Tutor screen. Nothing else in Kalamo sends anything anywhere — every lesson, story, review and speaking exercise runs entirely on your phone. The tutor is one screen out of five, and skipping it costs you nothing else.

If you are in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we suggest you do not use the Tutor screen. Sending your text to a company in China involves data-protection questions we are not in a position to answer properly for you as a one-person project.

Please don't type personal details. This matters more here than it would elsewhere. The tutor is for language practice — write about the weather, your day, what you ate. Do not tell it your full name, address, workplace, ID numbers, passwords, or payment details, and do not write anything you would mind a stranger reading.

The tutor is limited to 5 messages a day on the free plan and 50 with Kalamo Pro. You can use the whole app — every lesson, story, review, and speaking exercise — without ever opening the Tutor screen.

Kalamo Pro

Every new installation gets Kalamo Pro free for its first 30 days; after that, Pro is paid. To know which applies, our server keeps a small record for each installation number. It holds no name, email, phone number or payment card — only what is listed here:

These records are kept so that Pro keeps working for as long as you have paid for it. To have yours deleted, write to us with your code or the date you bought it.

Microphone

The speaking exercises and the tutor's talk mode can listen to you, so they can tell which words were understood or reply to what you said.

The tutor's voice

When Samir reads a reply aloud, the voice is produced by your phone's own text-to-speech, the same engine your phone uses for accessibility. You can mute it with the 🔊 button on the Tutor screen.

Notifications

If you turn on the daily reminder, the reminder is scheduled by your phone's operating system. No notification data leaves your device and we do not send push messages.

Children

Kalamo contains no ads, no purchases, and no chat with other people. The AI tutor is a language-practice conversation with a machine, not a person, and its replies are constrained to language teaching. Because the app collects no personal information and requires no account, there is no profile of a child to build. Parents who would rather their child not use the AI feature can simply not open the Tutor screen — nothing else in the app depends on it.

Changes

If a future version sends anything further off your device, this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the change will be described here.
